As we near the end of 2020 I am sure everyone is looking forward to Christmas and also to 2021 with the hope that a vaccine will soon be available to deal with Covid19.  We live in hope.

This year it wasn’t possible for North Petherton Town Council to have a Civic Service so I suggested to the Council that instead we use the money normally spent on this event, to supply a bench and tree to each of North Petherton, North Newton, Moorland, and Wilstock/ Stockmoor to mark the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War.  The bench and tree for Wilstock/Stockmoor is situated overlooking the lakes half way between the two villages.

This year the ever popular Christmas lights competition has been extended so that every area within NPTC will have its own competition, with the winner in each location receiving a cup donated by individual Councillors.  There will be an overall winner for the whole area who will receive the Mayor’s Cup.  A terrific effort was made by residents last year and we look forward to even more of you taking part this year.

Because of  Covid restrictions the carnival clubs cannot run their usual Father Christmas carts around our villages this year, but I have negotiated a plan with Father Christmas to visit us in a socially distanced way.  The dates for his visit will be published on the various Facebook pages closer to the time.

I would like to say a special thank you to Nigel and Carole Taylor who between them have done an incredible job in keeping the Country Park and Wilstock Way litter free.  They go out nearly every Sunday litter picking and keep the area looking so good for everyone to enjoy.  Please do remember to help them by taking your litter home.

Finally I would like to wish you all a merry Christmas and hope that common sense prevails so that next year we see a return to normality, sooner rather than later.  Stay safe and stay well.

Cllr Alan Bradford,

Mayor, North Petherton Town Council.
